Cyclists are well catered for in the Forest of Dean, on the edge of the AONB, with cycle routes through several of the Forest Enterprise sites.
Sustrans has opened a level riverside cycle route along the former railway line between Hadnock Road, Monmouth, and Symonds Yat East. Surfacing work has now finished and the trail, called The Peregrine Path, is fully open. Permission has also been given for a short cycleway at Old Station, Tintern, and for a stretch following the old railway line between Whitebrook and Redbrook, although work has not started.
Bikes can be hired from several providers in or adjacent to the area, and they can also suggest local routes. Pedalabikeaway is situated in the heart of the Forest of Dean, at the start of a waymarked, traffic-free trail, near Beechenhurst, and runs a hire outlet at Symonds Yat East for the Peregrine Path. In the Lower Wye Valley try Tintern Bike Hire and in In the Ross area, bikes are available from Pedalaway.
There is also a thriving cycle club running outings from Parkend in the Forest of Dean into the Wye Valley, both for road bikes and mountain bikes. Dean Forest Cycle Association
Bikes are accepted on some bus services in the area, but please check with the operator before setting out.
