Above the Wye at Brockhampton 23/05/12

Grassland Restoration 25/05/12

A training day held for members of the Countryside Management Association looking at GWT’s work on grassland restoration on Wyeswood Common and the ongoing management of Pentwyn Farm.

Bumblebees for Beginners 09/06/12

Workshop

A chance to learn the basics of bumblebee identification, and then observe them in their natural habitat in the flowery meadows of the reserve.
Did you know that there are 24 species of bumblebees in the UK?  Although some are very rare, others are thriving, including one species recently arrived from the continent.  Learn about their lifestyle and how to identify the commoner species, which can be overlooked or confused with other kinds of bees. (NB this course does not cover honeybees.)

Pentwyn Farm National Gardens Scheme Open Day 10/06/12

Family Event

Pentwyn Farm is a wild garden as beautiful as anything under cultivation. View the wildflowers of Pentwyn Farm, famous for its orchids, teeming with butterflies and with spectacular views across the Wye Valley and visit the neighboring reserve, Wyeswood Common, a 40 hectare grassland and woodland restoration project and home to the trust's flocks of sheep and lambs.
GWT’s Chepstow Local Group will be hosting a plant stall (offers of help to Hilary Lee on 01291 689326).

Meadow Plant Identification for Beginners 14/06/12

Family Event

A gentle stroll around the species-rich meadows of Pentwyn Farm looking at how to identify some of our more common meadow wildflowers and grasses, as well as some of the less common plants the site supports. (Check whether event still on if inclement weather is anticipated.)

Gardening for bugs, bumblebees and butterflies 14/06/12

Event

This event will look at the needs of pollinating insects, and ways in which gardens can be planted to attrach a wide range of pollinators.  How bumblebees, butterflies, moths, hoverflies and beetles use flowers as a food source will be discussed.  There will a visit to a local private garden which has been planted to encourage pollinating insects.

Tidenham guided walk 16/06/12

Walk

Come and enjoy the delights of the Wye Valley; this walk will take in 3 Trust reserves (Lippetts Grove, East Wood and Ridley Bottom) and a wealth of wonderful habitats in between.

The walk is on uneven terrain, with some hilly sections. There are stiles and kissing gates and it may be muddy in places.  Bring sturdy walking boots or shoes, walking stick or poles if usually used, water proofs, drink and packed lunch.

Open Farm Sunday 17/06/12

Family Event

This event will give you a wonderful opportunity to discover woodland and farmland wildlife at the award winning Herefordshire farm of Mark O'Brien and Liz Vice, as well as having the chance to meet farm animals and take part in family activities.

A guided tour of this unique farm will start at 2:00pm, led by the farm manager Mark O’Brien and assisted by the Wye Valley AONB Youth Ranger team.  View the woodland walk, where a wealth of wildlife flourishes. Learn about woodland management; coppicing and charcoal production on site. Meet the animals, Longhorn Cattle and Wiltshire Horned sheep high quality rare breeds.

Families welcome, wellies essential, tea and cake at the woodland camp.

Join Heather Hurley on a varied walk exploring sites associated with Tom Spring, ‘Bare-Knuckle Champion of All England’ in 1823.  Capture the flavour of Fownhope during the early 1800s before enjoying a cheese ploughman’s for lunch. Part of the Herefordshire Walking Festival
